Can Uber Be the Number One Player for Both Ride-Hailing and Food Delivery or Is It Biting Off More Than It Can Chew?
Uber has made moves into the food delivery industry and Uber Eats is a growing part of its business. DoorDash, UberEats’ biggest competitor is the most popular website for food delivery services in the US and is also quickly gaining market share over the UberEats app.
The company is famous for revolutionising modern day transportation but is making moves in other industries as well.
Uber entered the food delivery industry in 2014 and as at Q1 2019 Uber Eats represented 21% of the company’s gross bookings, up from 14% in Q1 2019. The food delivery indsutry is more fragmented than ride-hailing and we expect Uber to have to work harder in order to gain and retain market share.
The company has three main competitors for this part of its business; DoorDash, Grubhub and Postmates.
Uber Eats is installed on the highest percentage of android devices in the US, just under 7%. However that said, DoorDash comes in at second place, installed on just over 4% of android devices; but has the most significant YOY growth, an astonishing 248%.
